Did you know that September is Healthy Aging® Month? We all want to live as long as we can, but we also want to live as healthily as we can too. Modern medicine has enabled us to live longer than ever before, but quality of life is often determined by the lifestyle choices we make. Healthy Aging® Month was created to highlight the positive aspects of aging and provide the general public with general information on how to age better. Believe it or not, you can have a significant impact on the quality of your aging, and you can start today. Here are four ways you can improve your health.

Put Down the Smokes: You’ve told yourself that you were going to quit before, but today is as good of day as ever. According to the National Institute of Health, it’s never too late to quit, and you can experience a positive impact at any age. Smoking cessation reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other dangerous health events. Do you suffer from adult incontinence? Smoking is a contributing factor to stress incontinence, so putting down the smokes for good could potentially improve your condition as well.

Get Out and Walk: Did you know that a sedentary lifestyle increases your likelihood of dying – no matter the cause? Luckily, there’s an easy fix to that. Get off the couch and get moving. Now you don’t have to compete in a marathon to experience the benefits of an active lifestyle. A simple thirty minute daily walk will do the trick. And better yet, go with a friend. Here’s why…

Socialize: Living a healthy life involves more than exercising and quitting your favorite vices. The people who live the longest healthy lives are typically those who have a strong social network. They get together as often as they can with friends and family. If you’re lonely, there are many different ways you can change this. You can volunteer or join a Book Club or Walking Club. The goal is to get engaged with others and enjoy their company. You’ll be amazed by how much this could help you feel better.

Eat Right: Even if age is a state of mind, you can’t eat like you did when you were 18. It’s time to get serious about your diet. Eat more plants and stay away from anything with a mascot on the box. Although these may taste good, they are definitely not good for your health. If you have a sweet tooth, just remember that fruit is nature’s candy. A healthy diet is the best way to lose weight and get healthy as you age.
