  • Quit smoking – smoking cigarettes can worsen kidney disease by interfering with medications that treat high blood pressure, and uncontrolled high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney disease
  • Exercise regularly – As noted in the bullet above, high blood pressure is one of the main causes of kidney disease. If you regularly exercise, you can help control your blood pressure and keep it at normal levels
  • Keep your blood sugar on target as per your doctor’s orders
  • Schedule regular checkups with a kidney doctor (nephrologist)
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Lose weight if you are overweight
